BOOK REVIEW
Meera Lee Patel did it again from her bestselling journal ‘Start Where You Are’ comes ‘My Friend Fear,’ “she has taken the big scary concept of fear and crafted it into a personal yet universal love letter.” Meera is an author and illustrator that was raised in New Jersey, who uses her talent in her books visually. She released this amazing journal My Friend Fear Finding Magic in the Unknown in the month of November, 2017.
In My friend fear, Meera took us through a path that explained when we look deeply into the causes of fears it will always come down to one solution and that solution is not a magical solution to our problems like the all other traditional self-help journals would but it’s a solution of us being by ourselves at the end of the day. Whatever may be the problem or whatever we are worried about for example being rejected by friends, being rejected by the one person you love, being afraid to try new things or as Meera mention being afraid to move to another town, all of these fears will boil down to one thing and that is being stuck with ourselves. A lot of persons are afraid of being alone but why? When we are alone you are still breathing, we are alive, the world will not stop, and being alone is the right time to take our chance to go walk and explore after all being alone is better than being with someone that makes you feel unwanted. “Everything you haven’t tried yet and every opportunity that you haven’t taken advantage of, those are all opportunities for you to change where you are.”
Your world can be as big or as small as you make it but I think that often times the component in our lives that makes our world feel small or big is fear, think about it fear is a game changer and usually the biggest factor of why we make the decisions we do whether we realize it or not. However, here is an idea that stops me in my tracks, “what if our deepest fears are shinning guideposts, lighting the way of what we truly want in life instead of pushing them aside? What happens if we begin listening to our fears and allow them to lead us bravely into the unknown?”
Meera explained that most of the time we find ourselves sitting doing nothing but looking at what others are doing and feel bad about yourself and that is true because it is so relatable. But with all that being said, instead of harping on the fact that other people are out there having fun and doing things differently you should take your alone time and create something special for yourself. Create your own happy life by exploring new possibilities, going out and meet new people and create an experience that will satisfy yourself at the end of the day.
My Friend Fear Finding Magic in the Unknown is recommended to both children and adults and for those of us who do not find reading interesting, rest assure with this appealing book you will be able to read it since every page of the book has amazing calming water-cool artworks. It will help our youths tremendously in this generation since they all try to fit it when it comes to things that are trendy, it will help them to stop making excuses and face reality to become a better person with the mixture of personal reflections, inspirational quotes and questions for reflection. Also it will motivate you to take chances because at the end of the day all of the consequences we are afraid of when it comes to doing something will never occur until we do the awkward, uncomfortable things that we find scary. The minute we allow fears to guide us into the unknown that is when all the real magic will happen as the book advises.
