MUSIC CONCERT REVIEW

                                 Samuel Medas at RIOT 2019

A night of sweat, praise and youthful exuberance transformed the atmosphere at the Sophia Exhibition Centre. On February 23rd 2019, the fourth annual Gospel Fest under the theme ‘Riot’ brought out people of all walks of life. The audience screamed in excitement as the performers who graced the stage were local and international gospel artistes. Clement Glasgow, Christine Richardson, Lion Club, Samuel Medas, Jaron Nurse and Blessed Messenger were a few of the anticipated artistes.
Gospel Music may be considered slow and conventional, yet these artistes proved otherwise. Their distinct style and rhythm serenaded the crowd. Loud jubilation was ushered in as the first artiste of night, Clement Glasgow sang his smooth, reggae vibe songs and remixed versions of old gospel music. ‘Plan for me’, ‘A rhythm too for hard the Lord’ and ‘what can wash away my sins were few of his composed songs, and had mixed reactions from the crowd.
The youth filled crowd rejoiced as they danced along to the soulful Christina Richardson, ‘Fire in my hand’ which led those to worship. The slow paced tempo brought out a celebratory mood in the crowd. Sensational reggae artiste Lion Cub impressed and rocked the event with his fast spitting lyrics, leaving those in high spirit and enthusiastic about what’s to come. Intermission lasted about 10mins which gave the crowd the opportunity to revive and engage with each other.
As the concert resumed, stage lights were dimmed as the MC hyped the crowd for Guyanese award winning gospel artiste, Samuel Medas. He did not fail to have the crowd in excitement with his energetic performance of ‘Destiny’, ‘Sell Out’ and his newly released hit song ‘Blowing My Mind’.
Out of Trinidad and Tobago, the two final artistes of the night, The ‘Uncommon Boy’ Jaron Nurse and Blessed Messenger had the crowd wanting more even after their performances finished after 2:00am. Jaron Nurse dynamic performance and captivating dance moves had the crowd in hysteria, dripping with perspiration. The Trinidadian performed his songs, ‘Auntie’, ‘Caribbean Christian’ and; ‘Wakonda’. Blessed Messenger continued in excitement performing his songs, ‘Bring Me Through’, ‘Famalay’ and the showstopper ‘Get Ready’. After his performance he ministered and called those lay all their wrong doings and worship.
Gospel fest came as a highly anticipated event to attend. Not only did it welcome Christian youths but non-Christians also. Even though the concert was successful, there were some negatives. The event began one hour after it was scheduled to at the open air venue. This was a disadvantage since the weather changed drastically and forced many attendees to find shelter from the rain. During the concert stage lights were extremely bright which served as a distraction and danger to people’s eyes. All in all the event proceeded despite setbacks, and give the audience a taste of the genre of music never exposed to before.
